The schedule for Columbus County is full for the summer. There is a lot of moving and shaking going on, but if you don’t want to do it alone, consider bringing home a furry companion. 

• The Columbus County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services has reduced adoption fees by half for all the furbabies at the shelter until June 30. Dogs are $67.50, female cats are $37.50, and male cats can be taken home for $27.50.  

The fees for dogs cover a spay and neuter voucher, rabies, parvovirus, and bordetella vaccines, and dewormer. Cat fees also include a spay and neuter voucher and a rabies vaccine.  

The shelter is located at 288 Legion Drive in Whiteville. For more information about adopting or fostering an animal, call 910.641.3945. Available pets can be viewed online on the CCSAPS Facebook page, and photos are updated every Monday. 

• Whiteville Police taking the complaints about speeders to heart. The city’s speed trailer has been stationed on Madison Street near Frasier Street much of the week, reminding motorists that the speed limit is 20, not 45, after you cross Lee and Franklin. Based on the number of brakelights you can see facing north, some folks have been missing the speed limit sign just a few feet away.

• Friends of Rube McCray Memorial Library in Lake Waccamaw have announced the RMML scholarship recipient for 2022. Jessica Hunt is a graduate of East Columbus High School and will be attending the University of North Carolina in Greensboro in the fall. She will be majoring in Theater and Early Education. 

• The H.E.A.R.T.S. Foundation will be having their annual kickball tournament on Saturday, Jun. 18 at 12 p.m. There will be live music, food, and much more. Bring your families and lawn chairs, and enjoy the games. The event will be at the Chadbourn Parks and Recreation Center located at 116 Miller Street.  

Admission for spectators is $1 for children 12 years old and under, and $2 for those 13 and up. Spots for teams are already full, but the public is encouraged to come out and cheer the players on.  

All proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward the purchase of backpacks and school supplies for the foundation’s Back-to-School drive in August. • The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Whiteville will hosting a crafting event called Build a Snake Pop-up on Tuesday, June 21, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Children will be learning about snakes while making a snake of their own. 

Snake specimens will also be onsite for youngsters to see. This program is for kids aged 5-12 years old, and is worth five points in ecoExplore.

• Shizzy’s Wildcat Rescue has volunteer work days scheduled for June 25, July 9 and July 23. Fence installation is at the top of the task list. You must be 18, and able to work outside. Call 910.840.1886 or email rhondabilleaud@shizzyswildcatrescue.org for more information.

• Whiteville Police and Fire departments will be hosting a child safety seat check on Saturday, June 25, from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. in the Walmart parking lot. Folks are invited to come out and have trained personnel help parents make sure that their kids car seats are installed properly. This is a free event. 

• The Greater Tabor City Chamber of Commerce is seeking singers and musicians for a mass choir for the fireworks show at South Columbus High School on the evening of July 1. Rehearsals will be every Saturday at Grace Fellowship Church in Tabor City at 6 p.m.

• The 35th annual Columbus County fireworks celebration will be on July 1 at South Columbus High School. The gates open at 6 p.m., and food and drinks will be available for purchase. No coolers or pets are allowed at the event. The school is located at 40 Stallion Drive in Tabor City. 

• Southeastern Community College is now accepting enrollment into the Automotive Systems Technology program. The curriculum prepares individuals for employment as automotive service technicians, and provides an introduction to careers in the field. Classroom and lab experiences integrate technical and academic coursework.

The college is also offering classes to students at Whiteville High School. Technical and general education courses like Intro to Mechatronics and Writing Inquiry and Support will be taught on the Wolfpack campus. • Columbus Career and College Academy is now taking applications for a Social Studies teacher for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year. CCCA is the early college for Columbus County Schools on the Southeastern Community College campus. Those who are dual certified in Social Studies and Health and PE are strongly encouraged to apply for the position.
