Items stand prepared for sale at this year's Community Cats TNR garage sale in the 4-H barn at the Mason County Fairgrounds on Thursday, Aug. 18.

There’s a big garage sale at the fairgrounds today and tomorrow, and the proceeds are going toward cat population control.

The sale is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday in the 4-H building at the Mason County Fairgrounds.

It’s run by Community Cats TNR, which stands for “trap, neuter, return” — the procedure they put free-roaming cats through to keep their population and behavior in check.

“Even if you hate cats, this is a good program,” said board member Jyl Miller. “It makes less of those feral cats around. A lot less.”

This sale is their main fundraiser, and they hope to raise a few thousand dollars for the program.

“We have just about anything you might be looking for. … We don’t put out junk,” Miller said of what’s on offer. “We like to have good items. But it’s very cheap prices.”

Lined up on tables are puzzles, children’s clothes, toys, pet leashes and collars, glassware, jewelry, and assorted knick-knacks and doo-dads and odds-and-ends.

There’s a dining room table with a set of four chairs and an extra leaf for $150, with a curio cabinet and buffet table available from the same seller.

Other furniture includes a pair of French doors, a few cabinets and shower doors.

And if you were looking for cast iron skillets at last year’s sale, you’re in luck.

“Last year, somebody asked for cast iron skillets,” said board member Joanne Kelley. “This year, we have four of them.”

Community Cats TNR was formed in 2012 and has put 1,280 cats through the process as of this month, according to their brochure.

The cats are “humanely trapped by trained caregivers” and taken to veterinary clinics for a health check; spaying or neutering; rabies and distemper vaccines; and deworming, the brochure says.

After undergoing TNR, cats are healthier and better behaved, it says.

“They’re not a nuisance,” said Miller. “They won’t smell bad. They won’t spray. They won’t fight. A lot of them have turned really tame.”
