Our best bet to stay safe during this coronavirus pandemic is to keep our immunity up and tight. While having certain vitamins and minerals promise to rev up your immunity, nothing beats the desi kadha made at home. Made using easily available kitchen ingredients like black pepper, cinnamon, haldi, clove, gur, ginger and tulsi leaves, the desi kadha has numerous health benefits.

All of us use different methods and ingredients to make our immunity booster shots. While some of us hate having this not so tasty drink, there are a few who are overdoing it. And as we all know excess of everything is bad and so is true for the humble kadha.

Having too much kadha has some side effects including bleeding from the nose, boils in the mouth, acidity, problem in urinating and indigestion.

This happens because the ingredients used to make kadha including black pepper, Haldi, cinnamon, ashwagandha create heat in the body. Excess heat in the body can disrupt digestion, lead to bleeding from the nose and various other problems.

We talked to Dr Rakhi Nagar, BAMS, PGCPK, Ayurveda consultant and Panchkarma specialist about how much kadha should one have in a day. Here's what she has to say.

How much kadha can one have in a day such that it doesn't lead to any side effects depends on their body type as per Ayurveda.

Read here: Know your Ayurvedic body type

Kapha - People who have prominent kapha dosha can have kadha 2-3 times in a day with moderate amount of ingredients in it.

In fact, people who have kapha body type will feel better after having kadha as they are ones more prone to viral illnesses, which kadha can cure.

Pitta - People with pitta body type should not have kadha more than once in a day. These people should also make sure not to have kadha empty stomach or during the mid-day. It's best for such people to consume kadha in the evening.

Vata - People with vata body type can have kadha two times in a day. These people can also use some ghee in kadha to avoid dryness in the body.

Note: Per serving of kadha should not be more than 50ml. You can put 100 ml of water with ingredients, wait for it to boil down to 50 ml and then cool down kadha a bit before consuming it.
