Research demonstrating the role of multivitamins in promoting health and preventing disease has been mostly lacking at least until now. There are no broad healthcare guidelines that suggest the general public should take dietary supplements like multivitamins. However, a new study showed promising results on the relationship between daily multivitamin and mineral supplementation and cognition in older adults.

This three-year randomized, double-blinded study published this month in Alzheimer’s & Dementia found that taking a daily multivitamin may improve cognition and offer health benefits for people with a history of cardiovascular disease. In fact, those who took a daily multivitamin experienced slower cognitive aging by 60 percent, or 1.8 years, compared to those who took a placebo during the study period.

The researchers believe that there is an urgent need for preventative interventions and effective strategies to preserve cognitive function associated with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. Considering more than 46 million people worldwide are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, this is an important public health priority.

While this study alone may not change current nutritional and medical practices, it will likely prompt additional important studies into preventative interventions for cognitive health.

Certain B-vitamins, vitamin D, choline, iron and iodine have neuroprotective effects and can improve intellectual performance. At the same time, antioxidants such as vitamins C, E, A, zinc, selenium, lutein and zeaxanthin help protect against oxidative stress associated with mental deterioration. While a healthy and balanced diet can provide these nutrients, dietary supplements, including multivitamins and minerals, can help bridge any nutritional gaps. A registered dietitian can help you determine if your dietary pattern is lacking in any important nutrients.

A wide body of research emphasizes the consumption of whole fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish and olive oil for higher cognitive function. It’s evident that nutrition plays a very important role in cognition and brain health.
